As a Realtor, I have been using my EcoBroker training to help make environmentally friendly choices when staging and updating homes for sale. When updating homes for sale, we now spec low VOC paints, natural fibers, renewable resources, and energy efficient appliances and lighting. There is certainly more that can be done, and we are continuing to add new sources and resources.
As there are not presently many ‘green’ homes to buy in our market, I aim to find homes that are well built, free of moisture and other problems, and that lend themselves to environmentally conscience updates. Once purchased, I lend my time, my resources, and a great library of books and samples to help update the home.
This will help to build a pool of clients that have green features in their homes, which we can then effectively market when the home sells again.
I have become active with Berkeley-based Build it Green, and am accredited by Build it Green as a Certified Green Building Professional. http://www.builditgreen.org
I am also involved with Sustainable Moraga, a local non-profit group involved in recycling and other eco-friendly activities in the town where I live.
As a business person in a paper intensive business, we have been moving toward a more eco-friendly office. I have started a recycling program for print cartridges, and have recently implemented a transaction management system to reduce creation and storage of paper. Emails and faxes can now be stored electronically and shared – this often eliminates the need for a hard copy.
